Embasyy Of The Republic Of Indonesia Yangon Helped Repratiate 55 Indonesia Fisherman Deatained In Myanmar
Indonesian Embassy in Yangon repatriated 55 Indonesian citizens who have received the remission of their prison sentences from the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar back to Indonesia on Monday, June 8th, 2015.
The 55 Indonesian citizens were the crew who worked on the ships Yi Hong (66) OTS-040 (9), Citra Nusantara-VI (FT-102) (11 persons), Citra Nusantara-VI (FT101) (13 persons), Sri Fu Fa No. 7 (11 persons) and New Fortune KM (11 persons) who had been detained by Myanmar in Myanmar's territorial waters in the region of Myeik, Thanintharyi, Myanmar (approximately 930 km south of Yangon) since February 2014. In May 2014 , a Myanmar court sentenced four to six years in prison on charges of entering and fishing in the maritime region of Myanmar illegally. However, on May 28, 2015, the Government of Myanmar pardoned and freed all the Indonesian citizens to enable them to return to Indonesia.
In his statement, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Commissioner General of Police (Ret) Dr. Ito Sumardi, explained that the remission of the detained Indonesian Fishermen by the Government of Myanmar is the result of the commitment to the protection of its citizens by the Government of Indonesia, the Directorate of Protection of Indonesian Citizens and Legal Entities Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Yangon. The Embassy was able to obtain the said remission after approaching and meeting with the various authorities concerned of the Myanmar Government. “Even on the bilateral visit by the Indonesian Foreign Minister to the Myanmar Foreign Minister on May 21, 2015, the Indonesian Foreign Minister raised the issued and requested forgiveness for the 55 Indonesian Fishermen, including the issue as one item of the conversation. I think this remission is the result of the talks” said the Indonesian Ambassador H.E. Dr. Ito Sumardi, who has been assigned in Myanmar since February 2014.
The process of repatriation of the citizen also took place with the support at Fishindo Citra PT Samudera, the company which employs 46 out of 55 Indonesians, the company was willing to bear the cost of air transport for the repatriation from Myanmar to Indonesia. While the cost of nine other people was borne by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. PT Fishindo also expressed its commitment to pay all the entire salary of its employees for the period while they were is in custody and will also allocate compensation for the inconvenience caused to fishermen while in prison.
The crew arrived in Jakarta on Monday, June 8, 2015, accompanied by the Executive Consular Affairs at Indonesian Embassy in Yangon, by Malaysia Airlines MH 849 at 21:15 pm.
